Acoma
The Acoma Pueblo village known as Sky City sits atop a 376 foot tall mesa surrounded by a surreal landscape of soaring buttes, rock pinnacles and piles of gigantic boulders. Occupied since at least 1150, possibly as early as 900, it may be the oldest continuously inhabited community in North America. Today fewer than 50 tribal members live atop the mesa.
Witnessing the appreciation the Acoma people have for life is refreshing. They live in almost primitive conditions, but still can find joy in their day.
“The most remarkable spot I ever expect to see was the Pueblo Acoma - an Indian Village of great antiquity set on a lofty mesa in a wild desert landscape…impossible to tell of the beauty of the place and the effect of color - the cream rocks and earth - the green blue desert and the brilliant reds and yellows and blacks of the Indian costumes. We must see it….” excerpt from a letter from Ansel Adams to Virginia Best, May 1927
