Blue Period
The Blue Period is inspired by Picasso’s artistic works in the period between 1900 and 1904, when he painted essentially monochromatic paintings in shades of blue and blue-green, only occasionally warmed by other colors. Picasso’s works portray a recurring theme of desolation, focused on beggars, street urchins, and the blind. My photos depict elements of less desirable environments with simplistic natural forms as a representation of life. Using the cold monochromatic color palette, my photos, like Picasso’s, portray depression, sorrow, and angst in their representations of the old and frail.
For me, Blue Period represents the struggle both COVID-19 lockdowns and extreme weather have brought to the World. My use of high-contrast imagery continues into this series illustrating our dark and bright days. I see these scenes as desperate cries for help as the weight of their problems is overbearing. These are the results of years of abuse and neglect. As you view Blue Period consider those life experiences you have missed out on. Also consider the life you want to live and how you will impact the World and each other when we return to the “Old Normal”. - Greg Piazza
